Sometimes these are inherited traits while in other cases it could be caused by early loss of baby teeth or adult teeth, improper fitting of dental restorations, gum disease, undue pressure on the gums and teeth, misalignment of the jaw due to a sustained injury or tumors in the mouth and jaw.  In kids, it can be the result of thumb sucking, thrusting of the tongue or use of a pacifier and prolonged bottle use.
